A Week Full of Some Great Disney Fun in New York

disney micky music festival giveaway

Ahhh, Disney. Even though it has been over 3 months since I was at Walt Disney World, I am still living off the sweet memories I experienced while there. Every time I see another friend posting pictures from a Walt Disney World vacation, I go back to my own trip and smile. Everybody should have such sweet memories from a vacation. I seriously felt like a kid again. I actually was a kid (too many years ago to mention) when I first exprienced the magic of Walt Disney World.  Last week, I experienced more Disney memories. This time, the memories were created right here in New York.

Last Thursday night, I can’t tell you who had more fun at Mickey’s Music Festival, DisneyLiveNYNJ at Madison Square Garden. The songs, sights, and scenery were fantastic. Some of my favorite characters from Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, and Toy Story had my entire family (husband included) dancing in our seats. The show was narrated by Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Goofy, and Donald Duck. I love how classic Disney so nicely blends with the newer Disney characters. This show is running in the tri-state area until March 31! Tickets are also available at Ticketmaster.com, Ticketmaster Retail Locations, the arena Box Offices or by calling 1-800-745-3000. To discover more about Disney Live! go to http://www.disneylive.com, or visit them on Facebook and YouTube. @DisneyLive is the Official Twitter Feed of Disney Live!

Speaking of new Disney characters, Wreck-It-Ralph has also made our lives that much sweeter this week. Since my kids have been on vacation and I work from home, keeping them busy while I’m busy is challenging. When two new books from the film arrived this week, my son just about flipped  He absolutely loved Wreck-It Ralph. He even had the opportunity to meet his two favorite characters, Ralph and Vanellope von Schweetz, while we were at Walt Disney World Hollywood Studios last December.  Now he has something from the movie that he can’t put down!

Reilly, Sarah Silverman, Jack McBrayer, and Jane Lynch, this thrilling read-along brings the action of Wreck-It Ralph to life!

These new books have brought the film back into our home. I just love seeing how my son follows along with the storybook. His big sister has already read One Sweet Race to him a dozen times. He also really loves the illustrations which were created by one of the artists who worked on Wreck-It-Ralph. I also enjoy explaining to my kids about the creative animation team behind these memorable Disney characters. Who knows? Maybe one day they will grow-up to be illustrators!

I just received this extended clip from Disney’s Oz the Great and Powerful. My 5 year old saw it and can’t wait to see it again. This is a great movie for the entire family.

Hanukkah Hangout Brings Bloggers Together for a Night of Giving, Crafting, Creating, and Sharing

hanukka hangout

Right before the busy stream of Hanukkah events began, Jewish bloggers gathered together at the Hanukkah Hangout for a night of Giving, Crafting, Creating, and Sharing. The price for entry was a toy for families affected by Superstorm Sandy.

The evening started out with a welcome by Hanukkah Hangout co-hosts Jodi Samuels (jdeal and Metroimma) and Abbey Wolin and Esti Berkowitz (SweetUP). What better way to get better acquainted than using no more than 140 characters as the perimeters. The crowd of bloggers represented both traditional and online media. In traditional blogger event style, iPhones, Androids, and iPads shared the event as it was happening using the hashtag #hhangout. Once all of the introductions had been made, the bloggers started “creating”.

Abbey Wolin, SweetUP co-founder and founder of Not2Shabbey.com, gave a quick demonstration on how to take an ordinary piece of glass and make into something special. While some bloggers were with Abbey, the other bloggers competed in the Manischewitz Chanukah House Decorating Contest. Bloggers were split up into teams and created their own Chanukah House.

The bloggers were having so much fun creating and schmoozing that some of them did not get a chance to finish decorating their Chanukah Houses. However, the Chanukah Houses that were completed before the end of the evening were judged by a friend of our host for the evening. The decision was challenging, as each house had a unique and attractive design. The winning house was selected and the winners (Jessica Bernstein, Rafi Bernstein, and Gloria Kobrin) took home this beautiful kosher Godiva Chocolate package as their prize.

Thank you to the sponsor of this prize package, LeChocolatier, http://www.lechocolatieronline.com/sweet-holiday-planter.html. You can also save 10% on your order by using the code hhangout when you check out!

The winning house!

Not to worry, each Chanukah House is still eligible to win the Manischewitz Chanukah House contest. All photos can be uploaded easily to the Manischewitz Facebook page up until December 15th. Who couldn’t use an extra $500 this year? Besides, it is a lot of fun and a great activity for a Hanukkah party!

Manischewitz also has a fun Chanukah Cookie Decorating kit that your kids will just love. Just make sure they use their fingers to spread on the icing, not to eat it. Yes, this is the mission impossible!

Thanks again to all of our wonderful bloggers that came out to join us for the evening! Also, thanks to all of our fantastic bloggers that were tweeting and facebooking along with us that evening.

This holiday, consider giving back to those that suffered from the devastation of Superstorm Sandy. Many, many families have been affected and finding the extra time and money to give their children a gift this holiday season has had to take a back seat. Now, we can all help make this holiday special for them.

All toys collected from this event were donated to Achiezer.org.

PASSOVER PALOOZA! Lively and Unleavened!

March 18 – At the Original Streit’s Matzo Factory, Lower East Side, NYC

Is it possible to make Jewish holidays fun and engaging for children? Yes, and I am proud to personally know one of the best and most talented musicians doing that today. Mama Doni and The Mama Doni Band. They are reaching Jewish children and their famliies as Jewish holidays are happening. Here are what other people are saying:

Her stage name may sound as if it belonged on a jar of pasta sauce, but Mama Doni is an indisputably Jewish performer. Doni Zasloff Thomas in real life, she specializes in putting a Jewish spin on all kinds of musical styles, including reggae, rock, disco and Latin.” – The New York Times

New Jersey’s Mama Doni makes a zany musical chicken soup of reggae, rock, disco, Latin, klezmer, and other styles.”
The Boston Globe

“Not since Woody Allen’s Radio Days has American Jewish youth culture been celebrated with such a sublime mix of silly and substantive.” – Miami Herald

Join Doni Zasloff Thomas, a.k.a. Mama Doni, in kicking off Passover 2012 with Passover Palooza, a free event at the original Streit’s Matzo Factory, 150 Rivington St., NYC, celebrating Jewish culture with a high-energy Mama Doni show, a tour of the matzo factory, a Behrman House Publishers Jewish book fair, giveaways of matzos, macaroons, CDs, and posters, and more!

Streit’s, the famous New York City family-owned matzo company, has been making matzos for 87 years, and, of course, Mama Doni loves matzo. In anticipation of Passover, Streit’s and Mama Doni present a new kids’ music video, “MISSION IMMATZOBLE,” all about the quest for Kosher for Passover food:

Mama Doni is the lead singer/songwriter of The Mama Doni Band, honored with a 2011 Parents’ Choice® Award for their recent release, Shabbat Shaboom, and winner of the Simcha Award for “Inspiring Joy Through Music” in competition with more than 100 bands from 15 different countries at the 2008 International Jewish Music Festival in Amsterdam. The band celebrates Jewish culture with irrepressible zest in its interactive family rock concerts filled with catchy pop songs that break the mold of traditional Jewish music. Quirky, offbeat, and unpredictable, The Mama Doni Band offers up a contagious and unexpected blend of reggae, rock, disco, Latin, klezmer and “Jewgrass” – all woven together with a hip Jewish sensibility.

Elmo’s Birthday Party and Elmo’s World: Favorite Things DVD Giveaway

A couple of weeks ago I went to a birthday party with my kids. The guest of honor, a three and half year old red monster named Elmo. I think I was more nervous and excited than my kids.

The party location was at the Sesame Street corporate offices in Manhattan. When we arrived to the party room, it was full of moms, kids, press, and all out fun. There were two very talented balloon artists (I think that is what you call them) creating balloon versions of Elmo and Abby. In an adjacent room, a couple of long tables were full with young children coloring and creating projects with stickers. The food included Apple & Eve, Sesame Street themed juice boxes, Earth’s Best cookies, birthday cake, and more. We were only able to eat the items that had the kosher symbol on them, which included the Apple & Eve and Earth’s Best products. My 5 year old daughter kept asking everybody if the food was kosher, what a little mamala she has become! I kept looking around because I knew that the guest of honor would be making his appearance at any moment. My 3 year old son was with me on that one.

An announcement was made and we were treated to sneak peak of Elmo’s World: Birthdays,” from Elmo’s World: Favorite Things DVD. My kids loved the video, and we even have a copy to give away (see instructions below).

Following the presentation, Leela from Sesame Street introduced Elmo. He is even cuter in person. They sang a couple of songs together, which the kids just loved (and so did I!). Then, the lights were dimmed and a woman came walking into the room with a very nice cake and 3 and a half candles for the Muppet of honor. You can see it in the video below. Elmo made a wish, and the crowd was invited to meet him. Imagine an entire room full of kids gitty with excitement. I was thrilled to have my kids in a picture with so many Sesame Street Celebrities! Leela, Elmo, and Elmo’s creator Kevin Clash. Pinch me now!

Leela Sings Happy Birthday To Elmo

Once again, my daughter, at this very moment, inquired if the cake was kosher. Yes, in fact, the cake was from Costco which has a kosher bakery. Sweet, but that’s not all.

We were provided with a goody bag of Sesame Street goodies complete with the new DVD! For all of you families looking for a great family vacation, Beaches Resorts for Everyone by Sandals has kids programs like the Caribbean Adventure with Sesame Street. I want to go! These fun activities include: Birdwatching with Big Bird, Story Time with Elmo, Weekly Parades, Sesame Street Character Breakfast, Character Tuck-ins with Sesame Street Friends, and Birthday Parties with Sesame Street Friends. I can’t wait to check it out!

Sharon Osbourne and David Arquette Help Unveil New Disney Junior Toy Line at Toy Fair 2012

This past Monday, I had the opportunity to cover a very special Disney Junior event for Nancy Horn, a.k.a., themamamaven.com. When she asked if I could cover this event for her, I said “yes” the minute I heard Disney mentioned (and he even had a chance to finish her sentence). I still remember my first visit to Disneyland (over 35 years ago). The other day my sister found our original tickets from 1971! Like most of the world, those memories transport me back to my childhood and times with my family. Now that we are all living away from home and we insist that our parents call us when they get home, memories from simpler times are golden. As a mom, I am now sharing these wonderful moments with my children. Even after so many years, Disney continues to make me feel like a kid again. I was so thrilled to see and hear first hand some very exciting announcements from Disney Consumer Products. Continue reading
