#FYF Turning Over a New Tea Leaf at 45 Finding Yourself Friday

47b5d933b3127cce928bcabeee6100000016108bammjfw1bs

My birthday was this week in New York. I am full of emotions (maybe freaked out is a better word) that I am now officially 45 years old. When did that happen? Wasn’t I just the little girl with curly black hair and a dimples on my face that all bubbies would kvell over?

As a kid, my mother always made sure I had a birthday party with a lovely cake, fun games, and prizes. Since I am a summer baby, my birthday parties were always in the backyard. My older brothers and sister would help out with the preparations and all I had to do was put on my party dress and show-up. Fast forward many years, and I have become very low key about my birthday. My husband really wanted me to have some friends over (he is quite the cook and promised to make something delicious). While part of me wanted to bask in the celebration with friends, I took more of an introspective route this year. Instead of celebrating outwardly, I decided to look at how I could make 45 an even better year than 44.

I actually started this process back in February when I gave-up processed foods, desserts, white flour, and sugar. You can say that I have ‘turned over a new leaf’. By eliminating these foods, I feel better than ever and I find myself more positive. For example, the little things don’t bother me as much as they did before. I have learned to accept the things I can’t change and proceed with positivity in the things that I can achieve. It is so easy to look around at what everybody else is doing (all you have to do is go on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram). However, there was a time in February when I saw a photo of myself and I wanted to cry; I didn’t look healthy at all. My skin looked grey and my entire body looked bloated. I was so disappointed by that picture, and quite frankly, I was feeling sick about it. It was my own fault. I knew how I got to looking that way, I wasn’t careful about the foods in my life. I knew that it was time to look at food differently and start only to eat foods that would benefit my health. I allowed myself to feel bad for a day and then it was time to move on.

oolong tea

It has been four months since my initial journey to #flatthefat began. While my mind is feeling good, I need to take extra measures to get the weight off of me. While I have every type of body shaping and slimming garment in my drawer, I hate how they make me feel. While these items may flatten one area, the fat just gets pushed out over the sides. It has to go somewhere, right? The only other solution (plastic surgery is not an option here) to #flatthefat is to add on exercise. So, I decided to start swimming. Have you tried it lately? I am obsessed! I felt great mentally and physically. However, the weight is not coming off as it did for me in my 20s and 30s. I am adding yet another element to my #flatthefat regime; I am turning over a new #tealeaf. I recently read an article in Prevention Magazine about tea and how it could give my lazy metabolism the extra push it so desperately needs. In fact, the article, The Metabolism Miracle For Women Over 40. Did you know that according to Japanese researchers green or oolong tea can give my metabolism what it needs? I have actually tried this recipe and I wanted to share this incredible Metabolism-Boosting Iced Lemon-and-Ginger Green Tea mentioned in the article, here it is:

Serves 6
Combine 10 green or oolong tea bags, 2″ piece peeled fresh ginger cut into thin slices, 3 large mint sprigs, and 1 sliced small lemon in heatproof 2 qt pitcher.
Bring 4 cups water to a boil in saucepan and pour into pitcher.
Stir once and let tea bags steep 6 minutes.
Remove and discard tea bags and mint sprigs.
Add a touch of honey to tea, if desired.
Let cool 20 minutes.
Add enough ice and cold water to make 6 cups.
Serve over ice in glasses with fresh mint sprigs and lemon slices.

beautiful sunset

So, here I am, on this Friday, drinking my Bigelow Chinese Oolong tea. I am finding my new, energized 45 year old self, eager to continue #turningoveranewleaf and sharing it with you here. Who says that youth has to be wasted on the young, why night live your best life in the #primetime.

(Review) Making Water Available For Those Who Need It Most

Contributed by Lauren Finkelstein from save1person.org

Primetime Parenting sent this mommy blogger on another interesting and life changing assignment. This time it was to be enlightened about a global problem, something we take for granted in America but a real worldly tragedy: WATER.

The Associate Director of Development, of WaterAid, Hallie Tamez, spoke about the magnitude of this problem. In my limited world, I never thought about it before. Hallie spoke about how in third world countries, there’s no clean water and some women have to walk many miles to get water. And in this water, some people bathe, toilet and who needs to say more. And then some women have to walk many miles back to their villages to bring this filthy water to their families.
WaterAid works in 27 of the world’s poorest countries, transforming lives by improving access to water, sanitation and hygiene. This non- profit, hires local people to build the wells and maintain the drinking water, when WaterAid leaves that location.

We take for granted that water is everywhere to drink, but what about when it’s not accessible. When you make it accessible, people can get educated, work the fields, be with families, live healthier lives, things we just take for granted here in America.

(Review) #FYF Finding Yourself Friday: How I Found Myself Laughing and Relating To Author Tracy Beckerman

20130419150254

Last week, I rushed around in order to make it on time to the “Cool Mom Book and Blow Dry Bar Tour,” in order to celebrate Tracy Beckerman’s book, “Lost in Suburbia: A Momoir. How I Got Pregnant, Lost Myself, and Got My Cool Back in the NJ Suburbs.” The title had me, as anybody who goes through major life changes is cool in my book!

Speaking of cool, I wasn’t feeling much of that after a very busy day working on a major dinner event. As soon as my husband arrived home, I said goodbye to the kids and made my way to Manhattan. Thankfully, public transportation worked in my favor. As soon as I stepped out of the subway, I was within a few feet of Fix Beauty Bar. I have to admit, I was feeling quite disheveled, not even sure if I had any lipstick on anymore (don’t tell my mom, she never left the house without any). The minute I walked-in, I immediately felt relaxed. Let’s just say the Fix Beauty Bar did just that, I finally got a manicure! If you read Tracy’s book, you will find that she also felt like there was no time to do the things before her life got busy taking care of kids. That is not a bad thing at all, just a challenge to find the time. There is so much that Tracy shared, and in such a humorous way, I was laughing out loud through the entire book. Like, the time she was speaking to the police officer without knowing that a pair of her lingerie was clinging to her clothing. I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve found my son’s socks attached to my skirt. I may leave the house without lipstick, but now I always check for spare laundry parts attached. Tracy’s book is great, I hope she will write more and more. In the meantime, I can keep up with her over at http://www.lostinsuburbia.com

Now, a little bit about Tracy!
Tracy Beckerman writes the humor column, LOST IN SUBURBIA, which is syndicated to over 400 newspapers in 25 states to more than 3.5 million readers. She is the author of the book, “Rebel without a Minivan,” has appeared on The Today Show on NBC, The CBS Early Show, Better TV, LX NY, The Balancing Act on Lifetime Television, and CBS Sunday Morning with Charles Osgood. She has won a Writer’s Guild of America Award and a New York EMMY® for her writing, is a past recipient of the Erma Bombeck Humor Writers Award, and was recently selected as America’s Top Blogger by The Balancing Act on Lifetime. Tracy is a member of the National Society of Newspaper Columnists.

Lost in Suburbia is a syndicated humor column and blog by Tracy Beckerman. It is for any mom who is trying to hold onto just a little bit of her former, cool, pre-mom self!

After my much needed manicure and cool seltzer, I had the chance to visit with some of the sponsors of Tracy’s book tour. They are so cool, I just had to include them in this post as well:

I can attest to this, as the sample packet I received had step-by-step instructions and a wash cloth included! PrimeTimeParent Jennifer Lopez: Gave Birth at 39; Hotter Than Ever at 41 (almost 42)

(contributed by PrimeTimeParent, Audrey M.)

Alot of us are having successful birthing experiences after 35 years old. J.Lo did it and post birth was noted as being “delighted, thrilled and over the moon”. She said she’s waited a long time to be a mom. http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/23288908/

How long did she have to wait to get her awesome figure back?

It’s one of the issues Prime Time Moms face. We don’t have youth snapping everything back 10 hours after the birth.
http://moviestarbody.com/jennifer-lopezs-workout-and-diet/
http://www.nowloss.com/how-did-Jennifer-Lopez-lose-40-pounds-after-having-twins.htm
She says she works hard at it and eats right. She even uses meal delivery from Freshology.

So there’s no Star Secret? It’s the same old Eat Right and Exercise?

That’s a big, FAT “YES”.

PrimeTimeParent: Sarah Jessica Parker

(contributed by Audrey M.)

If you were wondering if you can have children later in life while maintaining your job as star of a cult HBO series, the answer is, “You Can.”

This tends to be a main concern for us women 35+ and want to have babies. We’ve spent our adulthood building our careers. And now, we are starring in an HBO series. We wonder, will I be able to be a great parent as I maintain a career? If my character gets cut, will I lose my Acter’s Guild health benefits? If my baby is sick will I miss filming of an episode? If I have to stay up all night with a collicky baby, will my makeup artist be able to cover up the bags? Will I emotionally scar my baby when I leave to take care of my fans? Will I remember my lines after I get mommy brain?

All this boils down to is, Will I lose my status, my edge, my viability…everything I’ve worked for, if I have a baby or two?

These are good questions and you should be commended for asking them now, rather than later.

Sarah Jessica Parker is a good example for us to look at, since she’s an average TV & movie star like most of us. If you’ve watched the Sex and the City series you might remember when Sarah was pregnant with her first child at age 37. (SJP had twins in her 40’s.)

I believe “Carrie” was dating Burger. The producers, cameramen and stylist did an excellent job of redirecting the viewer away from her emerging belly. If you have a dream team like this, they can take some of the pressure, responsibility and tasks of mommyhood off your shoulders, and then massage them.

I don’t know how Sarah and Mathew (her husband) chose to start a family. After all having a baby these days is a tough decision. If mom has to take time off from her job, that could throw the family budget out of wack (for a long time to come). There are many cost to raising a child, plus the added cost of putting your child in acting classes, getting them professional hair and makeup for their headshots and the commercials they’re currently shooting.

Like Sarah, we really need to weigh out what we can comfortably (that’s a relative term) “give up” to step into our new role, Maaaaaaaaaaaaa!

SJP is in the August 2011 issue of Vogue. On the topic of being a parent in her 40’s (a PrimeTimeParent) she’s quotes as saying, “I guess I think there are things about it that I hope have made me a better mother. I’ve had a lot of opportunities to do the things that I wanted to do, like sleep. I have slept till 11:00 for a lot of years. Honestly, the only thing that I’m concerned about is the energy: I hope I can maintain the energy.”

So while it’s smart to think about these things and plan ahead, there’s no way of knowing for sure how the future will play out.

You might just want to give up your role as star of Sex and the City for the ultimate supporting role in Raising Baby.
