Try this new and delicious Moroccan Meatballs with Caramelized Honey Onions dish:
Moroccan Meatballs with Caramelized Honey Onions

5 Extra Large White Onions, sliced into thin strips
3 tbsp. Extra Virgin Olive Oil
2 tsp. cumin
1tsp. curry powder
1tsp. turmeric
1tsp. ground all spice
Kosher Salt and ground black pepper to taste
1 tsp. Manischewitz Clover Honey

For Meatballs
1 lb ground lamb
1 lb ground chicken or beef
1 egg
1/4 cup Manischewitz Italian Herb breadcrumbs
1tsp. cumin
1 tsp. allspice
2 tsp. dried chives
1 tsp. dried parsley
1 tsp. kosher salt
Pinch Ground Black pepper
2 cups Manischewitz Beef Broth
¼ cup raisins

In a large Dutch oven or soup pot, over med-low flame heat the olive oil. Add the onions and all the spices to the oil and mix well. Sauté the onions for about 3-5 minutes, stirring frequently. Add the honey and mix well. Adjust the flame to low and cover pot. Mix every minute or two to keep the onions from sticking to bottom of pot.

In a large mixing bowl, add the 2 ground meats, egg, Manischewitz Italian Bread crumbs, and all the spices. Mix well.

Remove cover from onions and using a slotted spoon take half of the onions and place into separate bowl. Start shaping meatballs that are about the size of small golf balls. Place them gently into pot nestling them into the onions. After placing all the meatballs take the remainder of the onions and cover the meat balls.

Increase the flame to medium-low, add the Manischewitz Beef broth and raisins cover pot and cook for about 30 minutes. After 30 minutes remove cover, mix everything gently with a wooden spoon and cook for another 10 minutes or until the broth has reduced to less than a ½ a pot. Remove from flame and let cool slightly before serving meatballs. Serve meatballs over Jasmine rice.

Legendary Chef Jacques Pépin To Host The 4th Annual Manischewitz Cook-Off

Posted by Esti on 11/02/2009

cookoff_top_enterGrand Prize Winner Receives $25,000 Prize Package

I was just at Kosherfest 2009 last week in Secaucus, NJ, and I have to start my diet all over again. That should be the worst news, but there really were so many new and healthy kosher food and beverage products; MimicCreme, a non-dairy and non-soy gluten-free blend of cashews and almonds cream substitute, Brain Toniq, which touts itself as the only non-caffeinated “think drink” designed to increase mental focus, function and clarity, Kosher Valley offers kosher turkeys and chickens raised without the use of antibiotics or animal by-products, and are free to roam in a humanely-raised, stress free environment. Then there were the classics that we grew up with, like Manischewitz which now has an -natural Ready-To-Serve Broth with no MSG. That’s progress. You can also test out your cooking creativity at the 4th Annual Man-O-Manischewitz Cook-Off. I’ve included more information about the all-natural Broth and cooking contest below. By the time I finished this article, I already had an idea, hopefully you will too!

SECAUCUS, NJ (October 2009)—Just in time for the holiday season, The Manischewitz Company announces the launch of the 4th Annual Man-O-Manischewitz Cook-Off, a cooking contest designed to encourage home cooks to challenge themselves in preparing a kosher meal using the new Manischewitz all-natural Broth, made with real chicken and beef. The contest encourages home chefs to experiment with different ethnic foods and to think of preparing a Kosher inspired meal as part of that experience, in the same way people enjoy preparing Japanese, Italian, Mexican, Chinese and other popular ethnic cuisine. Entrants will compete for a chance to be crowned the “King or Queen of Kosher” and win the $25,000 grand prize package including GE Profile kitchen appliances, cash and more. Five finalists will win an all-expense paid trip to NYC to compete live on March 18th at the Jewish Community Center of Manhattan. The contestants will be judged by an on-site cooking panel consisting of food media and other culinary experts. This year the cook-off will be bigger and better than ever with legendary acclaimed chef, Jacques Pépin as the celebrity guest of honor who will act as MC, head judge and award prizes. Pépin is one of America’s best-known chefs, widely recognized as the host of eleven acclaimed public television cooking series and the author and publisher of twenty-six cookbooks. He is also a founder of The American Institute of Wine and Food (WIWF) and has been the Dean of Special Programs at the French Culinary Institute (New York) since 1988. “I am thrilled to be a part of the 4th Annual Manischewitz Cook-Off!” said Chef Pépin. “I always encourage people to experiment with new types of ethnic cuisine and products.” Chef Jacques Pepin has created some exciting recipes using the new Manischewitz Broth which will be available in the recipe section of www.manischewitz.com. “Over the past three years over 10,000 people across the country, spanning all ethnic backgrounds, have shared some amazing recipes.” says David Yale, President and CEO, of The Manischewitz Company. “As the leader in the kosher market, we pride ourselves on our wide range of specialty products that inspire cooks of all types to create exciting kosher inspired recipes.” Just-in-time for the Cook-Off, The Manischewitz Company has added a new line of ready-to-serve broths to its extensive portfolio of kosher products, giving you additional items to add to your creative recipe! New Manischewitz Broth starts with a recipe, not a formula, and is slow cooked in small batches. Filtered water is added to all natural ingredients and real kosher chicken and beef stock to deliver that homemade taste. Manischewitz Broth is packaged in a 14 ounce, easy open, pop-top can or a 32 ounce easy to pour reusable carton and is available in three flavors: Chicken, Reduced Sodium Chicken and Beef. Look for these wholesome broths in the kosher and soup section of supermarkets nationwide. Suggested retail price for the can is $1.69 and $2.99 for the carton. As an added bonus, this year’s event will benefit Jewish American Heritage Month (JAHM), a national month of recognition of the more than 350-year history of Jewish contributions to American culture. Updates on JAHM will be available on www.Manischewitz.com shortly and will continue through the end of JAHM on May 31, 2010. The Manischewitz Company is the official corporate sponsor of JAHM, and will work with the JAHM steering committee to drive awareness of events and programs. How it works The Manischewitz Cook-Off invites U.S. residents 18 or older to submit an original, easy-to-prepare entrée. kosherfest2009When I was approached by Kosherfest to be part of a panel of culinary experts to judge deli sandwiches, I was thrilled beyond belief. I was introduced to the deli sandwich from a very young age. Whenever I traveled with my family to New York, L.A., West Palm Beach, or Chicago, we always found our favorite delis and enjoyed their version of the Ruben, Pastrami on Rye, Corned Beef, Roast Beef, or Tuna on Challah. This coming Wednesday, the Best Kosher Deli deli sceneSandwich will be judged on taste, appearance and creativity.  I’ll be tweeting live from the event, just look for the #hashtag #kosherfest to get a taste of the competition (so to speak).

Here are more details about the contest from Andover Communications

Wars have been fought over less significant issues than where you can find the best kosher pastrami or corned beef or chopped liver sandwich in the New York metropolitan area.  To help answer that question, kosher delis will participate in the search for the best kosher deli sandwich at the 21st annual Kosherfest.

Great Shoes For Back To School At Marshalls

Posted by Esti on 10/18/2009

I was with my three kids when I decided to check out Marshalls to see if I could find a pair of sneakers for my girls before the new school year. This was my day! Check out these shoes for my girls (they have been wearing them  since we bought them so they don’t look as new and beautiful as when we found them that day at Marshalls.  I found a pair for each one of them and the total cost for both was under $25.  I found a pair of Original Bobby Jack

sneakers for my daughter that she loves for $10. For my other daughter, I found a pair of Carter’s in brown with pink stripes for $14.99. That is very good since I only wanted to spend $25 or less. I have always loved Marshall’s and this store in Far Rockaway (Bay Harbour Mall) was excellent.

marshalls blog post 003My kids got a bit gitty and tried on every shoe that they could find (the employees were very nice about it). When I was trying to check out, my 18 month old son managed to grab some candy, open the package, and start eating it. Can you believe he picked one that happened to be kosher?  I was distracted by my daughters as they decided to play hide and seek between the skirts and separates.

40 And Under Have Big Appetite For Prepared Kosher Food

Posted by Esti on 10/14/2009

(this story from koshertoday newsletter)

An increasingly younger kosher market is spending more on specialty foods for the Jewish holidays than their parents, is the upshot of conversations with retailers and kosher purveyors as they assess the results of the just concluded holiday season. Baby boomer customers were more likely to buy traditional kosher foods than the under 40 set, they concluded. The latter was likely to include flavored dips, olive oil, flavored herring, sushi and upscale cheeses while the older customers were still buying kugels, traditional salads, and healthier snacks and pastries. While retailers guessed that overall sales grew by as much as 10% over last year, they are suggesting that the purchase of the specialty foods may have been almost double that figure. “The interest in prepared foods has been nothing short of extraordinary,” said one Brooklyn retailer, adding: “Many of our younger customers spend more time in our refrigerated section that they do in the rest of the store.”

Pretty In Pink At The Martha Stewart Show

Posted by Esti on 10/14/2009

Inspired by Martha Stewart, 100% of net proceeds goes directly to Susan G. Komen for the Cure

When I was invited to attend a live taping of “The Martha Stewart Show” with an audience of Breast Cancer survivors, I got chills. The fact that these women have battled cancer and won is heroic on so many levels.

Everybody has known somebody that has had to live with Breast Cancer. That is why Ford Warriors in Pink’s new partnership with Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia organized this momentus event in New York today.  To help in the fight against breast cancer, Martha Stewart dedicated an entire episode of “The Martha Stewart Show” to breast cancer health, treatments and awareness – the cornerstone of the Ford Warriors in Pink program.

A 15-year partner of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Ford is teaming up with Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia (MSLO) to focus on breast cancer awareness and develop innovative ways for people to give back in the fight against breast cancer.

During the show, Martha Stewart  revealed the newest Ford Warriors in Pink crafting tool inspired by the homemaking icon herself with 100% of net proceeds going towards Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

The hour-long episode culminated in the giveaway of a new 2010 Ford Taurus to one lucky audience member, Stephanie Adams, whose name was drawn at random. Adams, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in July of 2008 at the young age of 27, underwent months of chemotherapy and 35 radiation treatments. Adams, a San Francisco, CA native, will turn 29 this Saturday. Currently enrolled in a PHD program, Adams is working on her thesis in New York City. Her research on how blood vessels are formed and grow has actually given rise to some drugs that are being used to treat cancer.

In the special episode that airs this Friday, viewers will learn how to reduce the risk of breast cancer with Dr. Dara P. Richardson; cancer-fighting recipes including celery root and ginger gold apple soup and yogurt panna cotta from chef Amanda Freitag; and an inspiring stationery made using limited-edition Warriors in Pink breast cancer stamps, which are available at www.FordCares.com (100% of net proceeds go to Susan G. Komen for the Cure not just in October but all year long).

During a special taping of ‘The Martha Stewart Show’, which will air on Friday, October 16 (nationally syndicated, check local listings), daytime host Martha Stewart was joined by an audience full of survivors and supporters, as well as Ford Warriors in Pink to raise breast cancer awareness.

The new Ford Taurus 2010 is a sweet car and the technology is cutting edge. Martha Stewart even added some of her personal favorites to the voice-activated Navigation System with integrated class-exclusive* SIRIUS Travel Link™** on the 2010 Taurus combines Global Positioning System (GPS) technology with 3-D mapping to provide turn-by-turn voice guidance. But that’s only for starters. System features include:

• Current, local gas prices

• Traffic backups with alternate routes

 • Current and forecasted weather

 • Movie listings, including theater locations, show times and ratings

 • Scores for major sports teams

• DVD movie viewing on navigation screen when the vehicle is in Park

 • Bird’s-eye map view with six adjustable angle settings

 • Saves destinations, provides the shortest route, reroutes you if you miss your turn

 • 10GB digital jukebox with voice-controlled access to music files

 • Personal photo upload capability

My mouth dropped to the floor  Dr. Dara P. Richardson Heron , when she told the story of how she discovered a lump just one month after her wedding. She hadn’t even written all of her thank you notes yet!  She couldn’t stress enough how important it is to have regular screening tests. This is a very important part of the battle and the most effective way for women to lower their risk of dying from breast cancer. Screening tests can detect breast cancer early, and that is when it is  most treatable. This episode will air this Friday, October 16.

Posted by Esti on 10/08/2009

When I heard that Katja Presnal was hosting a #MUAH with E.L.F Makeup, I just had to be there. When you know that if Katja Presnal of Skimbako Lifestyle is involved with an event, it will be fun and full of great women mom bloggers. There were two make-up artists at the party so I jumped in at the chance to get pampered and polished. If you haven’t heard of E.L.F, definitely check them out at http://www.eyeslipsface.com/.
